expression gynecomastia

The source of the expression gynecomastia is from Greek and means: gyn - woman, mastos - breasts, meaning female breasts, and it depicts a benign condition of enlarged breast tissue in men, on one side or both sides.

Epidemiology: The phenomenon of gynecomastia in men is the source of 60% of problems related to male breasts, and 85% of palpable lumps in male breasts. It may appear at any age, but 40% of cases appear in adolescents between 14 and 15.5 years of age, against a hormonal background, as a result of taking certain drugs or without any known background (75% of cases).

Scientific background: breast tissue enlarges and grows under the influence of estrogen (the female hormone) and shrinks under the influence of testosterone (the male hormone). Normally, both hormones are present in both sexes. The level of testosterone in men is higher than the level of estrogen, and in women the opposite. If the proportion of these hormones changes in favor of estrogen, the breast tissue will enlarge.

Gynecomastia symptoms : A lump in the breast is growing. A third of these lumps can be felt to the touch. In a third of cases, inflation appears on one side. The lump is usually in the center of the breast, but it may also appear to the side.

Gynecomastia treatment : First, the cause must be known in order to treat it. It should be noted that in 75% of cases we do not find the cause. Most patients turn to a plastic surgeon due to the embarrassment that female breasts cause them. Gynecomastia is treated by surgery. Generally, the surgery is done under anesthesiaThe year. There are many options for the surgery.

In the event that the gynecomastia is an enlarged mammary gland mainly, the glandular compound is removed through an incision made at the edge of the nipple. The resulting scar fades with the passage of years. In the event that the breast is enlarged as a result of excess fatty tissue, then liposuction is performed for these fats. There are cases in which gynecomastia is caused by adipose compound and fatty tissue, then an open excision procedure is performed with liposuction. Another consideration in choosing the type of surgery is the amount of excess skin. The surgeon decides whether, in addition to the gland, the skin needs to be removed.
